Water Reserves Report
Environmental Education

Within the framework of an open communication policy with the local school community, EYDAP has hosted an educational program called "The Water Cycle" for the last seven years.  Every day many students visit EYDAP in order to attend this program. EYDAP’s objective is to increase awareness of the younger generation in matters of rational water resource and wastewater treatment.
The educational program is carried out with the support of audio-visual devices and includes a detailed historical overview of water supply and sewerage facilities in Athens from ancient times to current times.  The program provides useful information about the transfer of raw water from the man-made raw water reservoirs to the water treatment plants and about the treatment water undergoes to become potable. Special attention is also given to the sewerage collection facilities and to the operation of the wastewater treatment plants. The program has been designed to suit to the educational needs of young students, so that difficult technical terms such as "sewerage", "Wastewater Treatment Plants", or "water scarcity" are comprehensible to children.
EYDAP’s educational program has become very popular and many students attend the program from allover of Greece.
The role of the program is:
-To enable students to develop a special interest in environmental protection and to demonstrate an ability to plan further action for the protection of the environment
-To improve communication lines with students and to have them develop an appreciation for the significance of water as a sensitive product, invaluable to human life and worthy of special attention
Students respond to the program with great enthusiasm. The involved students critically examine environmental issues, participate actively and exchange views about environmental protection. EYDAP offers the children gifts such as pens, notebooks and literature about water that greatly contributes to the children’s awareness of environmental protection issues.
We must also mention that many university students also visit the Water and Wastewater Treatment plants where they get information about the operation of these plants by specialists. Furthermore many foreign representatives of water supply companies and experts visit EYDAP to exchange opinions and information concerning modern developments in the public and private water sectors.
EYDAP aims to further embellish the current environmental education program in order to continue to cultivate environmental awareness in younger generations. At the end of the program, students leave with a sense of achievement that comes from attending an educational program that can be used as a platform for further action.
