CULTURAL HIDRANT
EYDAP, in cooperation with the Municipality of Halandri and 6 other partners, participates in the project CULTURAL H.ID.RA.N.T. The project is implemented through the European program (Urban Innovative Actions) and is co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund. The project focuses on the utilisation of the non-drinking water of Hadrian's Aqueduct and its emergence as a monument of immense cultural value.
The project has a total budget of €3,916,620 with European funding of €3,133,296 and will run for 3 years (7.2020-7.2023).This is a particularly innovative project, as for the first time an urban regeneration project is based on the principles of sustainability and rational water management through the use of a Roman monument.
Through its participation in the Urban Innovative Actions Program, EYDAP increases its scope of action in the European Co-funded Programs, especially in the field of innovation.
EYDAP will actively participate in all the actions of the program, contributing to the awareness on water management and the promotion of Hadrian's Aqueduct, through its Cultural Network. The aim of the Cultural Network is to develop a unified cultural identity as well as to produce actions that promote the Company's history and provide educational and cultural benefits to the local community.
Utilization of non-potable water from Hadrian's Aqueduct
The responsibility for the design, construction, maintenance, systematic quality control and overall management of the new non-potable water network through Hadrian's Aqueduct belongs entirely to EYDAP.
It is a system of about 5 km of pipelines aimed at serving the irrigation needs of the area, providing about 30,000 m3 of water/year.
"Drop a Message" App
EYDAP, as part of the project, launched the new "Drop a Message" app, the first digital application-game to introduce the visitors to the magical underground world of Hadrian's Aqueduct.
The aim is to highlight the historical importance of Hadrian's Aqueduct, the complexity of its design and its historical significance, as well as to raise public awareness of the possible uses of its water.

The app is available on iOs and Android. By registering, users can connect to one of the 228 visible wells of Hadrian's Aqueduct (the Lanterns) and read the messages that "flow" through it. They can "pick up" the messages flowing at that moment through Hadrian's Aqueduct, literally under their feet, and "drop" their own virtual message into a well of Hadrian's Aqueduct, letting the water "carry" it away until another user receives it from the next wells.
The digital application-game "Drop a Message", was implemented by EYDAP in the scope of the CULTURAL H.ID.RA.N.T.program, in order to inform the public and raise awareness on the environmental benefits of the utilization of non-potable water from Hadrian's Aqueduct.
Direct benefit for society and the environment
The use of the hitherto untapped water in Hadrian's Aqueduct, which has been in continuous operation since the 2nd century AD, is expected to provide significant energy and environmental benefits, not just for the Municipality of Halandri but also for other municipalities.
EYDAP's decisive role in the utilization of the untapped water from Hadrian's Aqueduct, in highlighting its historical importance and in establishing it as a visitor attraction through the awareness and participation of students and residents of the Municipality of Halandri, creates a direct impact on society, the economy and the environment.
The Non Potable Water Network
ΟEYDAP's design for the new non-potable water network from Hadrian's Aqueduct in the Municipality of Halandri has been completed, with the network consisting of two separate sections.
One part starts from the reservoir on El Alamein Street, runs along the Rematia to Giftopoulou Street and from the other to the Rizarios School. The other part of the network starts from the junction of Kodros and Ethnikis Antistaseos streets and extends to Agias Varvaras Park.

EYDAP's new non-potable water network in the Municipality of Halandri is the pilot for the general planning of the expansion of the non-potable water network from Hadrian's Aqueduct in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture and Sports, the Region of Attica and the interested Municipalities that will gain significant advantages in terms of irrigation of their area and the development of recreational and cultural facilities.
